Accor Showing Interest in IHG

If you've traveled a bit or even if you just from Manila, you've probably noticed a lot of big hotel brands around the metros such as Sofitel and Novotel. Well as of late there has been a significant interest from Accor to merge with IHG which would make it the biggest hotel chain in the world surpassing the marriage of Marriott and Starwood back in 2016.

There are 8 Accor hotels and 5 IHG hotels currently in the Philippines and a merger between the two would surpass Marriott in terms of number of hotel rooms worldwide with Marriott at 1.4 million and the merger creating a combined 1.6 million hotel rooms worldwide.

If you look at it geographically it makes a lot of sense. Since Accor has a strong presence in Europe while IHG in North America and growing fast in China. The merger would come at a time of a pandemic which would be horrible timing.

Due to the uncertainty of the travel industry the merger still has a a big question mark whether it'll actually happen or not. If it does happen, their loyalty program would be something to look forward to.
